In my opinion, there is still a long ways to go before Deaf people will no longer face challenges in a hearing workplace. I think that we should be putting in place laws that force companies to accommodate the needs of Deaf individuals. For example, in America companies are required to have an interpreter present during job interviews. Thus, ensuring clear communication throughout the interview process.
There are lots of ways that a job in a hearing workplace can be less challenging for a Deaf individual. However, companies are not willing to spend the money on these types of supports. Yes, it is expensive but it would allow Deaf people to do their jobs successfully. I asked my dad if he would hire a Deaf person, he said yes. My next question was how would you communicate with them. He responded with; "Hopefully they would lip read I guess, I don't really know its never happened to me". I proceeded to ask my dad if he could lip read perfectly, to which he replied no. This is the kind of mentality is what fuels the challenges that Deaf people face. The fact that most Hearing people are uneducated, about how to work with Deaf people. If their is a Deaf person in the workplace, I think that there should be an opportunity for people to become educated.
